What A Week!
The team at One Wedding would like to raise our glasses of champers and toast to the many Gay couples who from midnight on 29th March 2014 were able to legally marry their partner in the eyes of the law, with all the same rights that a straight couple hold.
In an article for the Pink News website, the prime minister wrote: “This weekend is an important moment for our country.” It says we are a country that will continue to honour its proud traditions of respect, tolerance and equal worth.”
He added that ‘The law change would encourage young people unsure of their sexuality’.
Mr Cameron later tweeted ‘Congratulations to the gay couples who have already been married – and my best wishes to those about to be on this historic day.”
Although the UK has made history with this landmark ruling, the law prohibits the Church of England from performing same-sex weddings, and allows other religious organisations to refuse to perform them, if they wish do so.
One of the first couples to tie the knot after the new laws came in were Peter McGraith and David Cabreza, who wed after 17 years together.
Mr Tatchell told the BBC that they, as well as all the others getting married had “made history” and “made Britain a more tolerant, equal place’’.
Best wishes to everyone who has waited for this day of equality to finally come, and a big ‘Cheers’ from One Wedding.
